Initially, a gluten-free diet was undertaken in order to treat gluten intolerance, also known as coeliac disease, but nowadays more people are choosing that lifestyle as a measure to counter feeling tired, depressed, or bloated.

The effects of gluten-free diet in general are said to be feeling happier and loosing weight, although the last is a much more likely outcome because you remove excess calories found in wheat. Often, ‘feeling better’ is identified as a benefit of the gluten-free diet, but that is a common mistake. In reality you feel happier because of the reduced calorie intake and the consequent loss of weight.

How to Switch to a Gluten-free Diet?

Changing your lifestyle so drastically is not an easy task, so naturally, embarking on a gluten-free diet will require some getting used to. Cutting so abruptly certain foods from your diet will inevitably make you feel deprived but don’t despair. Instead, focus on all foods you can eat and get the most of them by trying out some gluten-free recipes.

What Can You Eat?

  • Fresh eggs
  • Meat, poultry, fish
  • Most dairy products
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Beans and nuts (unprocessed form)
  • Corn in all its forms
  • Rice
  • Soy

What to Avoid When on Gluten-free Diet?

Everything that is made of wheat, barley or rye, including breaded meat and poultry, beer, bread, cereals, cake and candies, to list but few. But there’s still hope. There are now more gluten-free products available in supermarkets, such as pasta and bread.

Before you decide to exclude so many delicious treats such as cakes and chocolate from your diet, try something simpler like more exercises and eating more fruits and vegetables for instance.
